Lin Snelling, Rob Kitros, Julieanna Preston, et. al., The Amazing Natural: January 2026/ Singapore, August 2026/Edmonton CAN, June 2027/ Montreal CAN and 2028/ Vancouver CAN.

This artistic research project called The Amazing Natural focuses on new potentialities for improvisational dance strategies bringing people into studio spaces where they can move, talk, work, and think together. It proposes four specific collective creation events to grow an improvised dance The Amazing Natural that will involve dancers, theatre artists, writers, academics and an invited audience in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Singapore. This improvised dance is created and danced each time in consideration of specific dance scores based on breath/and breathing and the expertise, craft and conversation that ensues. We will think through this central question: What if the potentials of combined creative fields could produce new forms of expression and physical engagement in thought as physical and breathing, something that moves, and has a locus point in body, ours and that of the planet and all life forms living within it.

January 2026: Singapore

The first event of The Amazing Natural was hosted by Zhang Minggao at NAFA. I gathered Lin Snelling, Rob Kitros, Julieanna Preston, Zhuohao Li, Michael Rhinehardt and Maxwell Hanic. The seven of us spent 5 days performing an iterative and processula improvisation, working to refine scores, become familiar with one another in movement, with and without words and on the final day reflecting on the experience in what we call The Spontaneous Book. On the fifth day, students, academics and proefessionals we welcomed into the studio to watch and join in if they wished. The group also held a seminar at NUS for postgarduate students and academics of the performance and theatre programmes.

August 2026: Edmonton Canada

The Amazing Natural second edition took place in Edmonton Canada at the University of Calgary, Timms Performing Art Centre. Lin Snelling, Rob Kitros, Julieanna Preston, Zhuohao Li, Michael Rhinehardt, David Walker, Gerry Morita, Tori Morrison, Emilia Hillyer, Camille Renarhd, Sarah Bild, Susanna Hoodhum and Maxwell Hanic. We repeated the 5 days programme established in Sngapore and adjusted the scores and practices to respond to the larger group and the new skills brought into the group. This performance started to incorporate projection and audio technology in the black box studio as well as drawing, written and spoken word and various props/ objects. On the evening of the fifth night, we wlcomed a large and diverse audience from the oacal area into the space to observe, contribute to The Spontaneous Book, participate and to offer comment and critique.
