In this essay, two artist friends embrace the notion of drawing as a durational, generative and processual process set apart from figural representation. They carry out an intimate, call and response letter-writing exercise stimulated by the image of a hand gesture, how it came to be, what it suggested, and how it resonated between their individual creative practices. In letters that are themselves generative gestures, notions of materiality, becoming and risk, which point to the value and practice of “letting go” percolate in reflections on the act of drawing in an expanded sense.
